Ulve, Newpower Shine As Toros Sweep Steel

BOX SCORE

Blake Ulve and Carter Newpower both scored twice as the Mason City Toros defeated the New Ulm Steel, 10-1, on Saturday night at the Mason City Arena.

The Toros scored four power-play goals and clinched home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs with the win. Mason City also scored 10-or-more goals in a game for the fifth time this season and took all eight games against New Ulm this season.

Ulve scored the game’s only goal in the first period but the two teams erupted for a combined six goals in the second period. Matt Kochanowski scored his fourth of the year on a sharp-angled shot at the 2:21 mark of the period and then Nik Howell scored a breakaway shorthanded goal less than two minutes later.

New Ulm got on the board with a power play goal at 7:26 of the second but Derek Humphreys and Carter Newpower both scored power-play goals before Jordan Newpower wrapped up the busy period with his fourth goal of the season.

Carter Newpower scored his second of the game less than a minute into the third before Ulve, Rex Staudacher and Luke Robertson capped the scoring.

All but four Toros recorded at least one point in the win and four different players had multi-point nights.

The Toros wrap up the regular season next weekend when they host the Granite City Lumberjacks on Friday and Saturday. THe puck drops at 7:30 p.m. for both games.
