Toros Visit Granite City for Early Measuring Test

GAME NOTES 10.1-2.21

The Mason City Toros hit the road for the first time this season when they take on the Granite City Lumberjacks on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1-2, at Armadillo Sports Deck Arena.

The Toros are looking to build off their 2-0-0-0 opening weekend where they took both games against the Alexandria Blizzard. Carter Newpower and Cal Levis both scored two goals apiece in the season-opening 8-5 win on Sept. 25 and Jack Campion scored the game-winner late in the third period of a 3-2 win on Sept. 26.

Mason City and Granite City (4-0-0-0) are the only two undefeated teams remaining in the NA3HL West Division. Granite City’s hot start is due in part to their impressive work defensively. The Lumberjacks outscored its opponents 19-5 in wins over Minnesota (twice), Willmar and New Ulm. Granite City scored at least four goals in all four of those wins.

Kyle Mortensen (2+3) leads the Lumberjacks with five points. He picked up both of his goals in Granite City’s most recent game, a 5-2 win over New Ulm last Saturday.

The Toros’ NA3HL predecessor, the North Iowa Bulls, went 6-3-0-1 against Granite City last season. The teams faced each other on back-to-back days on four weekends and split each of those series.
