Mason City, IA- In a possible playoff preview, the Mason City Toros faced off on Friday against their I-35 rival, the Rochester Grizzlies. The Toros came into tonight’s game on a 3-game win streak that saw them record 31 goals over 3 games. Friday’s matchup saw Mason City carry their momentum forward into their best game against Rochester this season.
Matt Ivanov opened the scoring at 9:46 into the first when he took a pass from Jax Schauer and circled the net to put in the wrap around. Six minutes later, Dominic Thomas slipped a backhand shot past the pad of Rochester netminder Tate Cothern to extend the lead to 2-0.
Rochester broke the shutout in the 2nd before Mat Ivanov chipped a loose puck up and over Tate Cothern for his second of the night and extended the Toro’s lead to 3-1.
Jax Schauer continued the scoring in the third when he redirected a back door tap in from Miles Berg to put the Toros up 4-1. Earlier in the season, we sat down with Devin Peck in our Post-game Interview who joked trying for a goalie goal. Well, Peck attempted it took his shot tonight, and almost succeeded before Rochester denied him. The Toros would record an empty net goal on a Dominic Thomas empty net goal to secure the victory 5-1. Dominic Thomas did the honors of ending the night with an empty-netter.
Mason City improves to 22-19-2 with four straight wins.
Peck recorded 38 saves on 39 shots faced.
