The Mason City Toros defeated the Oregon Tradesman, 4-1, to cap off a perfect showing at the NA3HL Showcase on Wednesday afternoon at the Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
Mason City defeated all three opponents that it faced this week thanks to four different goal-scorers in the weeks’ finale.
With the game tied 1-1 and Mason City on a power play Carter Newpower drove to the net and was tripped up. He was awarded a penalty shot and scored on a backhander to give the Toros the lead for good. The goal marked Mason City’s first on a penalty shot and Newpower’s team-leading 25th.
Jack Campion scored the lone first period goal but Oregon tied it up less than a minute into the second period. Rex Staudacher added to Mason City’s lead late in the second and Mason City native Nik Howell scored an empty netter to wrap up the week.
Owen Carlson stopped 29-of-30 shots to pick up his fourth consecutive win in net and ninth of the season. He turned aside 56-of-57 shots that he faced in two wins during the Showcase.
The Toros head into the holiday break winners of three in a row and remain second in the West Division. They return to action on Dec. 30 on the road against the Alexandria Blizzard.
