Owen Carlson turned aside all 26 shots that he faced and the Mason City Toros blanked the New Ulm Steel, 6-0, on Saturday night at the Mason City Arena.
Six different Toros scored and Mason City picked up its third team shutout victory. Carlson recorded his second of the season.
Shota Kaneko led Mason City with four points (1+3). He scored his third power play goal at 15:55 of the third. Cullen Hogan and Carter Newpower each recorded a pair of assists to give the Toros three players with multi-point nights. Newpower is third in the NA3HL with 64 points.
Newcomers Jett Arminen and Derek Humphrey also scored for the Toros. Arminen scored the game’s first goal at the 11:53 mark of the first period in his first game with Mason City. Humphrey knocked home his own rebound to score his first goal with the Toros in his third game with the team at the 17:35 mark of the second.
Saturday’s victory marked the second consecutive game in which the Toros got a pair of goals from defensemen. Rex Staudacher scored at 17:29 of the first and Matt Kochanowski scored his second in as many games at 6:10 of the third.
Nik Howell scored Mason City’s other goal with his 5th of the season five minutes into the second period.
The Toros face their rival, the Granite City Lumberjacks, next weekend on the road. The Lumberjacks have taken three of the four meetings against Mason City and have won 26 straight games since losing to the Toros on Oct. 1. Friday and Saturday’s games both get started at 7:30 p.m.
