The Mason City Toros (3-3-0-0) rallied back from a two-goal deficit but fell to the Rochester Grizzlies (7-0-0-0), 5-2, on Saturday night at the Rochester Rec Center.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, a five-minute charging penalty on Rochester left the door open for a Toros comeback and they would cash in. Sota Isogai tapped home a centering pass from Dillon Schmidt to tie the game at the 6:21 mark of the third for his first goal of the season.
Rochester scored the eventual game-winner 10 minutes later and scored two empty-net goals in the final two minutes of regulation.
After Rochester took a two-goal lead into the first intermission Cullen Hogan cut the deficit in half at 7:49 of the second after blocking a shot from the point and then taking it the other way for his third goal of the season.
The Toros outshot the Grizzlies 35-28, including 26-19 in the final two periods. It marked the first time that Mason City did not win a game in which it outshot its opponent this season.
The Toros face the Willmar Warhawks next weekend with Friday’s game at Willmar and Saturday’s tilt at the Mason City Arena. Tickets for the 3 p.m. game are available at masoncitytoros.com/tickets.
