Toros Magical Shootout Win vs Granite City

Nov 4, 2023

The Mason City Toros had a magical night on Wizard night with a 5-4 shootout victory over their West Division rival the Granite City Lumberjacks.

Luke Robertson opened the scoring 9:44 into the first when he fired a well-placed shot over the shoulder of Granite City netminder Sam Schowalter to put the Toros up 1-0.  Mason City extended the lead in the second when Zach Laurila found the puck and crashed the net. Netminder Scholwalter kicked the puck back out to a waiting David Loahr, who fired one into the open net to put the Toros up 2-0 at the end of the first.

Robertson would add to his goal total on the night when he forced the turnover in the Granite end and would add a short-handed goal to put the Toros up 3-1.  He then recorded his 1st hat trick of the season when he picked up the puck at the red line and placed a shot over the stick side of Schowalter to extend the lead to 4-2.

Granite City battled back to force overtime, scoring two goals in the third period and tying the game with under a second to play in regulation. After 5 minutes of overtime play, the game would go to the shootout.

Both Luke Robertson and David Loahr  scored in the shootout to secure the victory for the Toros. Devin Peck was flawless in the shootout and stopped a total of 50 of 54 shots thrown on his net through the course of a busy night.
