Toros’ Late Push Not Enough Friday vs Granite City

BOX SCORE

Cal Levis and Dillon Schmidt scored in the third period but the Mason City Toros fell to the Granite City Lumberjacks, 5-2, on Friday night at the Mason City Arena.

The Toros’ four-game win streak came to an end in part because of a three-goal barrage by the Lumberjacks in the second. Granite City outshot Mason City 13-3 in the first period but only led 1-0 after 20 minutes. All three of their goals in the second period came in a 6:01 span.

Levis struck on the power play at the 6:31 for his 10th of the season, which is tied with Jack Campion for the team lead. Each of Levis’s last four goals have come on the man advantage and he leads Mason City with six power play goals.

Dillon Schmidt cut the deficit to two with his third goal of the season, all of which have come in the last three games, at the 11:28 mark of the third. He cashed in on a broken stick for a brief two-on-one and cashed in to give the Toros late life, but the Lumberjacks scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to ice the game.

The Toros host the Lumberjacks again on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Kids 12-and-under dressed in a Halloween costume get in for free and can trick-or-treat on the concourse during the first intermission. Tickets are available at masoncitytoros.com.
