Toros Blank Lumberjacks

Erik Chaffe stopped 37 shots to lead the Mason City Toros to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Granite City Lumberjacks on Saturday night at the Mason City Arena.

Blake Ulve, Sota Isogai and Carter Newpower scored to lead the Toros to their second victory of the season against Granite City. The Lumberjacks took the season series, 6-2, but the Toros dealt Granite City two of their three regulation losses this season.

Chaffe and the Toros penalty kill held strong, stymying all seven Granite City power plays, including a brief five-on-three Lumerjack advantage in the third.

Ulve and Isogai scored 1:58 apart in the first period in the opening 5:26 but the Toros did not get another shot until the final minute of the first period.

Newpower slammed home his own rebound 38 seconds into the second for the game’s final goal and his 37th of the season. Newpower picked up his 90th point of the season on Isogai’s goal in the first. At the end of game action on Saturday he leads the NA3HL with 91 points.

The Toros end the regular season 33-13-1-0 and finish second in the West Division. They will host the Willmar Warhawks on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Game 1 of the West Division Semifinals. Tickets go on sale Monday at masoncitytoros.com.
