Carter Newpower scored two goals, including one in a three-goal second period, and the Mason City Toros (4-3-0-0) defeated the Willmar WarHawks (4-2-1-0), 6-1, on Friday night at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.
Jack Campion, Cal Levis, Luke Robertson and Rex Staudacher also scored in Mason City’s five-goal triumph. Erik Chaffe turned aside 47-of-48 shots in net to pick up his second win of the season.
The Toros were outshot 48-38 but killed all five WarHawks power plays, including three different penalty kills in the first period. Campion netted his sixth of the season in the first period before Levis, Robertson and Newpower all scored in the opening 3:26 of the second period. The WarHawks got their only goal in the third in between tallies by Newpower and Staudacher.
In addition to Newpower, Brendan Sloth and Nik Howell also added multi-point nights with two assists apiece.
Mason City returns home Saturday to face Willmar and go for the weekend sweep. The puck drops at 3 p.m. at the Mason City Arena and tickets are available at masoncitytoros.com/tickets.
