Carter Newpower scored in every period for his first hat trick of the season and the Mason City Toros defeated the Willmar WarHawks, 6-3, on Thursday night at the Mason City Arena.
Nik Howell scored the game-winner 2:53 into the third period for his first goal of the season. The Toros added two more in the period thanks to Dillon Schmidt’s fifth of the season, all of which have come in the last five games, and Newpower’s hat-trick goal just seven seconds later.
The Toros entered the third period tied after Willmar scored twice in the second period. Mason City stretched its lead to 3-1 after Newpower’s second of the game but gave up two goals late in the period.
Sota Isogai scored the game’s first goal at the 5:57 mark of the first period to mark the ninth time that Mason City scored first this season. They are now 8-1-0-0 when striking first and are 8-0-0-0 when taking a lead into the first intermission.
Thursday marked the third straight game that Mason City was outshot, with Willmar leading 32-25, but this was the first game in that span that the Toros won.
Mason City heads on the road the next two nights to face the New Ulm Steel for the first time this season. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. both nights.
