The Mason City Toros swept both games against the Willmar WarHawks this weekend with a 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Mason City Arena.
Cal Levis and Carter Newpower both scored twice to move the Toros past the WarHawks and into second place in the NA3HL West Division. Jack Campion tallied the game’s first goal as he scored for the seventh time in eight games.
Willmar outshot Mason City for the second consecutive game but Owen Carlson was sharp in net. He stopped 32-of-33 shots in his Toros debut to become the fourth different Mason City goaltender to not only man the crease but also pick up a win.
For the second straight day the Toros never trailed. Campion put them ahead just 1:16 into the game but Willmar tied it up at the 15:05 mark. Newpower lasered one over goaltender Will Pinney’s left shoulder at 16:48 to give Mason City a lead that it would hold onto for good.
The WarHawks put pressure on the Toros early in the second, but Mason City held them off and cashed in on a pair of second-period goals from Levis. Rex Staudacher fed Levis for a shorthanded goal at the 12:19 mark and then just under two minutes later Levis cashed in on the power play after nifty passing from Campion and Newpower.
Newpower picked up his third two-goal game with a goal at 14:00 in the third after Campion forced a turnover and found his linemate in the slot.
The Toros now sit second in the West and six points back of Granite City, prior to action Saturday evening. Mason City will host the Minnesota Loons on Oct. 22-23 at the Mason City Arena. Tickets are available at masoncitytoros.com.
