Jack Campion and Shota Kaneko both scored a pair of goals and the Mason City Toros defeated the New Ulm Steel, 6-3, on Friday night at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Kaneko continued his torrid stretch after missing five games last month. He has recorded 10 points (3+7) in six games since returning from injury on Oct. 22. He tied the game up at 17:15 of the first and then added another goal just after a power play expired for the first-of-three Toros goals at 8:38 in the second period to record his first multi-goal game of the season.
Campion began the season by scoring a goal in nine-of-the-first-10 games but was riding a three-game scoreless streak prior to Friday night. He now leads Mason City with 12 goals with his second multi-goal game of the season. Kaneko and Campion became the 10th and 11th Toros players to score multiple goals in a game this year, respectively.
Despite trailing for the bulk of the first period after surrendering a goal 4:44 into the game, the Toros struck for two late goals when Kaneko and Campion found the back of the net just under two minutes apart.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Mason City scored a pair of goals not far apart. After Kaneko found the back of the net for the second time, Campion matched him with his second of the night and then Ryan Kaspar scored his second goal of the season just 10 seconds afterwards to push the Toros’ lead to three.
In the third, Dillon Schmidt scored in his sixth consecutive game for his sixth goal of the season and Nathan Gilleshammer scored his first goal with the Toros in his fourth game with them.
Mason City looks to go 3-for-3 this weekend when they face the Steel again Saturday night at 7:10 p.m.
